We were treated to a show around the Ocean Youth Trust South’s beautiful yacht Prolific on Tuesday, whilst she’s in dry dock. We were invited onboard to carry out a galley survey with particular attention to the cooking appliances.
The Ocean Youth Trust South is an adventure sail training charity, taking young people aged 11-25 to sea in their beautiful 30-metre long vessel Prolific.
A real beauty and full of character, she was built in 2005, as a tribute to the 19th Century Norwegian herring-fishing vessels and is a hybrid of historic design while benefiting from modern-day construction, previously used for sail training with young people in Norway.
OYT South brought this unique boat to the UK, where she helps young people to develop the skills to succeed in life.
With a waterline of 23.4 metres, a 26 metre deck and 30 metre bowsprit , Prolific has a draught of 3.2 metres and falls within the Small Commercial Vessels Code.
She has the potential for up to 26 berths but, conforming to coding requirements, she sails with only 12-15 young people (including group leaders where appropriate) plus 6 or 7 adult staff and volunteers.
A beautiful Bermudan ketch with bowsprit and high bulwarks to provide a very safe area for young people and novice sailors to move around, Prolific has a huge saloon with room for everyone for meals, briefings, games and more; a good navigation area with lots of space for young people to get involved.
Being super fast, she provides an exciting sail and we look forward to a return visit very soon!
