National Oceanography Centre

Earlier this week we were on site in Southampton at the National Oceanography Centre.

We were there to carry out essential galley repairs onboard the #RRS Discovery, which were completed prior to heading back out to sea.

The RRS Discovery is one of two world-class research ships operated by the National Oceanography Centre, with state-of-the-art capabilities. She is the NOC’s newest research ship (and the fourth ship of its name), and is a multidisciplinary ship, specifically designed for the challenges of 21st century oceanography.

RRS Discovery was delivered to the NOC on the 8 July 2013; she is fitted with the most up-to-date and high-tech instruments and equipment, making it ideal for oceanic exploration.

We were called to assist to repair x2 valentine fryers with control and overheat thermostats and the 24 volt safety system was sorted and tested. Both combi ovens were tested and new parts fitted to ensure the crew of 50 are fully fed for their next project.

With the ability to withstand extreme ocean environments, the RRS Discovery is highly sophisticated with the ability to operate in high sea states. She comes with sub-bottom profiling and multi-beam equipment for mapping the seabed, while her dynamic positioning capability means that Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) can be operated from on board.
